Households in Ireland throw away between €700 - €1000 each year

On average every household in Ireland throws out between €700 - €1000's worth of food each year. Donegal County Councils Environmental Awareness Office highlights the benefits of composting your food waste.

Composting is a natural process that turns garden materials and vegetable food scraps into a dark crumbly and earthy smelling material called compost. And you can do it in your kitchen.

Composting is a key component of the eco-friendly puzzle, because it takes waste that’s destined for landfills and turns it into usable, nutrient-rich soil, which is perfect for gardening.

The majority of food wasted can be composted in a few simple steps and isn’t just for the overly committed recycler, all that is needed to make compost is food, air and water. It’s as simple as that.  Compost bins can be purchased from your local Council office for €13.

Recycling and composting of domestic waste has been established as one way of reaching the target of biodegradable waste consigned to landfills. The amount of waste being sent to landfills has been a significant problem over the last few years although composting can help reduce the amount of waste being sent to the already over flowing landfills.

What can be composted?

A selection of everyday food items can be composted such a Fruit Peelings, Vegetable Peelings, Bread, Pasta, Egg Shells, Tea Bags, Coffee Grounds as well as a selection of non food items such as Grass cuttings, leaves, Shredded paper & Cardboard.
